  • Author Visit to Shipham

Wed 24 Apr 2024 Lindsey Murphy

On Wednesday 24th April, Shipham First School was treated to our second author visit of the year! Tracey Corderoy, an accomplished children's author, joined us in a special assembly, and read a book from her Shifty Mcgifty Series. Then the children learned how to draw one of the characters, Slippery Sam! All of them were given a signed copy of one of Tracey's books to take home, and they were left inspired to write and tell stories of their own, and engage further with their reading and love of books. Thank you Tracey!

  • Police Visit

Tue 16 Apr 2024 Lindsey Murphy

On Tuesday this week, Shipham First School had a visit from a local constable and his police vehicle. The policeman arrived at lunchtime and treated the children to a tour of the vehicle and all the equipment, including sitting in the front as a policeman and in the back in "jail!!" The constable gave the children a presentation during assembly, explaining the roles and responsibilities of a police officer, and answering many questions!

  • International Women's Day

Fri 08 Mar 2024 Lindsey Murphy

Friday 8th March was International Women's Day. The children chose an influential woman from the past or present, and made wooden spoon dolls of them, with amazing results. They discussed the reasons for their choice, and how women have shaped the world through their bravery and intelligence over the years.

On the 7th March 2024, Shipham First School Celebrated World Book Day. Children and Staff came to school dressed as characters from the amazing and ever popular children's author Julia Donaldson. The day was filled with story telling and illustrating, sharing best moments of favourite books and stories, reading to each other and generally having lots of literary fun!

On Thursday 7th March 2024, Oak Class were busy planting new trees to create a brand new hedge at Shipham First School. The lovely new trees, of many varieties including crab apple and beech came from The Woodland Trust and I Dig Trees charities. Oak Class made a good start on the hedge, and the rest of the children will also be getting involved over the next few days.

  • Oak class Visit to The Earth Science Centre at Whatley Quarry

Mon 26 Feb 2024 Lindsey Murphy

On Monday 26th February Oak Class visited Whatley Quarry, in line with their Rocks, Relics and Rumbles topic. They learned about the history of rocks and the roles and responsibilities of a working quarry. They also learned some really cool facts! Did you know that we each use the equivalent of an elephant's weight in limestone a year?! And that there are rock components in toothpaste and orange juice!! The children had a great time, asking lots of questions and taking part in rock experiments in the workshop following their tour.

  • RSPB Bird Watch

Fri 23 Feb 2024 Lindsey Murphy

The children of Shipham First School have been actively involved in the RSPB Bird Watch this term. In addition to the special visit to Ham Wall to see the starlings murmuration, they have been monitoring and identifying all the different birds they see at school (particularly during Forest School), and also at home. They have really enjoyed the activity and it has provoked a great deal of discussion! The birds have benefitted from the children's creativity as they have been able to feast off the home made bird feeders, and the children have demonstrated a love of the birds through Art, creating some amazing pictures, showing how much they have learned about our beautiful feathered friends, and what we can do to protect them during these winter months, and indeed throughout the year.

  • Visit from Nina Grontvetd, Norwegian Children's Author

Tue 20 Feb 2024 Lindsey Murphy

On Tuesday 20th February, Shipham First School had a very special visitor. Nina Grontvetd, an accomplished Children's Author, gave the children an insight into life in Norway, her home, including where she lived, where her children went to school and the Norwegian flag. The children were then treated to a story Nina wrote and illustrated, about her and her little sister when they were growing up! Finally, they got to hear a short and meaningful story read out in Norwegian, a real treat! Nina presented the school with some of her lovely books which we will treasure. Thank you Nina, for the wonderful and enriching assembly and workshops you gave, we hope we will see you again!

  • Year 4 Visit to Ham Wall to see the Starlings

Thu 25 Jan 2024 Lindsey Murphy

Last Thursday, some of our Year 4 children had the unique opportunity to see the starlings murmuration at Ham Wall in Meare. They were not disappointed! The starlings gave a spectacular performance to the children, who were mesmerised by the movement of these incredible birds. Many thanks to Mrs Leader, who organised this special trip, and to all those who helped.

  • Christmas Nativities

Tue 12 Dec 2023 Lindsey Murphy

The last week of term before Christmas was incredibly busy for Shipham First School. Parents and carers enjoyed very successful and entertaining Nativities from KS1 and KS2 at the church. The children and staff worked very hard to produce these amazing performances which were delivered very professionally!

On the last day of term the whole school enjoyed a session of toboganning at Mendip Ski Slope. Children (and some staff!) whizzed down the slopes to music and snow flurries, getting everyone into the Christmas spirit. It was a wonderful way to end the term!
