On Friday 11th February, The Year 2s (Chestnut Class) from Shipham First School ventured down to Middlezoy Aerodrome as part of their ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ topic. In class they had been learning about the history of flight and famous aviators from the past such as The Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart and Amy Johnson. On arrival at the aerodrome, the children had the opportunity to explore the hut in which the pilots have displayed their many aviation related collectables and spoke to one of the pilots about how flying works. Then, they had the opportunity to explore the airfield, sketch some of the planes, find out about their history and watch them landing/ taking off. The highlight of the day for many of the children was getting the opportunity to sit in one of the open-cockpit planes. After a delicious lunch of sausage, chips and jam donuts, the children finished the day with a ‘design a paper plane’ competition and a Q + A session with Dave Linney, an ex-RAF pilot. The children had prepared wonderful questions to ask him before the visit and found out a lot about his life and career. It was a fantastic first school trip for the children and there are most definitely some aspiring future aviators in the class now.
